One of the most common questions we get from homeowners in Fresno and the surrounding Central Valley is: “How often do I really need to change my AC filter?”
The Short Answer
As a general rule, you should check your filter every 30 days and replace it at least every 90 days. However, in the Central Valley, where dust and agricultural particles are highly prevalent, you might need to change it more frequently.
Factors That Impact Filter Life
- Pets: If you have dogs or cats, their dander will clog a filter much faster. Change every 60 days.
- Allergies: If anyone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma, change the filter every 30-45 days.
- System Usage: During our scorching July and August heatwaves when your AC runs constantly, filters clog faster. Check them monthly.
- Filter Type: Cheaper fiberglass filters need replacing every 30 days. Higher quality pleated filters (MERV 8-11) can last up to 90 days.
Why It Matters
A dirty filter restricts airflow. This forces your system to work harder to pull air through, which leads to:
- Higher energy bills
- Premature wear and tear on blower motors
- Frozen evaporator coils (which can completely break your AC)
- Poor indoor air quality
Changing your filter is the cheapest and easiest way to prevent a very expensive repair bill.
